Why Ham Lake Homeowners Choose Spray Foam
Minnesota winters demand insulation that actually performs
Stop Winter
Drafts
Spray foam expands to fill every crack and gap, an airtight seal fiberglass batts cannot match. No more cold spots or uneven heating in your Ham Lake home.
Lower Energy
Bills
ENERGY STAR estimates about 15% savings on heating and cooling from air sealing plus insulation. Many Ham Lake projects also qualify for utility rebates.
Increase Home Value
Buyers notice a home that stays comfortable year-round. Insulation pays you back twice: lower bills while you live there, stronger appeal when you sell.
Reduce Exterior Noise
Open-cell spray foam is an exceptional sound absorber. It fills the wall cavity completely, so rooms near busy roads, flight paths, and neighbors feel noticeably quieter.
Help Stop Ice Dams
Ice dams start when heat leaks into the attic and melts the snow on your roof. Sealing those air leaks first, then adding insulation, keeps that heat in the house.
Eco-Friendly
Choice
Reducing your energy consumption is one of the most impactful things you can do for the environment. Spray foam lasts the life of the home without settling or losing R-value.

Insulation for Ham Lake Homes
Ham Lake is acreage country, and that changes what people call about. Most of this city is large lots on well and septic, custom-built homes rather than subdivisions, and a detached shop or pole building sitting behind most of them. Half our calls out here are not about the house at all. Somebody put a heater in a 30 by 40 shop, ran it for one December, saw the propane bill, and now wants the building sealed. The other half are the houses themselves, a lot of them built in the eighties and nineties with the big vaulted great room that was the thing to do at the time. A vaulted ceiling has no attic above it to blow into. All you have is a few inches of rafter cavity between your ceiling and the roof deck, usually with a batt stuffed in and a vent chute that may or may not still be open. That is a cathedral ceiling running cold in one spot and getting ice dams over the eave, and it does not get fixed with more blown-in.
Common Insulation Problems in Ham Lake Homes
Detached shops and heated garages in Ham Lake are usually bare steel or bare stud, so every dollar of heat goes straight through the shell. In the houses, vaulted and cathedral ceilings from the eighties and nineties leave a shallow rafter cavity with no room for enough conventional insulation. Homes on this side of Anoka County sit far enough out that wind exposure is real, and older builds have untouched rim joists. Add mice looking for a warm wall in November and the gaps become a second problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you insulate detached shops, pole buildings, and heated garages in Ham Lake?
Yes, and it is a good share of the work we do out here. An uninsulated pole building with a heater in it is basically heating the yard. Closed-cell foam on the underside of the steel gives you insulation and an air seal in one pass and it stops the condensation that drips off a cold metal roof deck in January. If you are heating the building to work in it, that condensation is usually the thing bothering you as much as the cold. For attached garages the approach is different because you are dealing with a shared wall to the house.
Our cathedral ceiling has no attic above it. How do you insulate that?
You work in the rafter cavity, and there is not much of it, so R-value per inch is the whole game. Closed-cell spray foam gives you far more performance per inch than a batt does, which is why it is usually the answer in a vault. There are two ways to go. Either you keep the vent channel above the foam and stay a vented assembly, or you foam the roofline solid and make it an unvented hot roof, which has to be done deliberately and completely. Travis looks at the roof, the existing venting, and what is happening at the eave before he tells you which one your house should have.
What is spray foam insulation, exactly?
Two liquid components that get mixed at the gun and expand on contact, so instead of laying a blanket over a surface, the material fills and bonds to whatever shape is there. That is the real difference. A batt does not seal the gap around a wire penetration or the crack where a top plate meets the sheathing. Foam does, because it expands into it. Insulation and air sealing in one step. It costs roughly two to three times what blown-in does, and there are plenty of spots where blown-in is the smarter spend.
How do I get rid of mice in the attic under the insulation?
As a house settles you get cracks, and those cracks let heat out and mice in. Get the mice out first, with traps or a pest control company. Then close the way in. A mouse can fit through a gap about the width of a pencil, and foam alone will not stop one that wants through. So small holes get steel wool held in place with foam or caulk, and bigger openings get metal or hardware cloth. When we seal a rim joist or an attic floor, we close a lot of those gaps at the same time. Travis will point out where yours are at the estimate.
Is spray foam insulation fire retardant?
Spray foam is a combustible material, and code requires it to be covered by a thermal barrier or an approved ignition barrier depending on what the space is used for. In a finished room that is your drywall. In a shop, a crawl space, or an attic that stays unfinished, that can mean an intumescent coating applied over the foam. This is exactly the kind of thing that gets skipped on a cheap install in an outbuilding, so it is worth asking any contractor you talk to how they are handling the barrier before they quote you a number.
