Why Spring Lake Park Homeowners Choose Spray Foam

Minnesota winters demand insulation that actually performs

Stop Winter
Drafts

Spray foam expands to fill every crack and gap, an airtight seal fiberglass batts cannot match. No more cold spots or uneven heating in your Spring Lake Park home.

Lower Energy
Bills

ENERGY STAR estimates about 15% savings on heating and cooling from air sealing plus insulation. Many Spring Lake Park projects also qualify for utility rebates.

Increase Home Value

Buyers notice a home that stays comfortable year-round. Insulation pays you back twice: lower bills while you live there, stronger appeal when you sell.

Reduce Exterior Noise

Open-cell spray foam is an exceptional sound absorber. It fills the wall cavity completely, so rooms near busy roads, flight paths, and neighbors feel noticeably quieter.

Help Stop Ice Dams

Ice dams start when heat leaks into the attic and melts the snow on your roof. Sealing those air leaks first, then adding insulation, keeps that heat in the house.

Eco-Friendly
Choice

Reducing your energy consumption is one of the most impactful things you can do for the environment. Spray foam lasts the life of the home without settling or losing R-value.

Insulation for Spring Lake Park Homes

Spring Lake Park is a small city that straddles two counties, and almost all of it got built in one twenty-year window after the war. That makes it unusually easy to predict what is wrong with a house here before walking in. Ramblers and story-and-a-half homes, small lots, 2×4 walls, and an attic that was insulated once in 1958 and topped off by somebody in the eighties. The story-and-a-half is the one that gets called in. That upstairs bedroom is a heat box in July and the coldest room in the house from October on, and the reason is the knee walls. The finished space up there is a box sitting inside the roof, and the parts you cannot see, the knee wall backs, the sloped section, the little attic pockets behind them, are usually bare or close to it. This is the work Travis specializes in and has done for years across St. Paul and Minneapolis. The fix is sealing and foaming the roofline so the whole upstairs sits inside the envelope. From the morning we start to the time we stop, the change in that room is drastic.

Common Insulation Problems in Spring Lake Park Homes

Almost every home here predates 1970, so the rim joists are bare. Nobody spray foamed a rim joist until the late nineties, and until somebody does, that cold conducts straight through a framed 2×10 sitting at ground level and your floor stays cold no matter what the thermostat says. Attics have layers: original loose fill on the bottom, something blown over it decades later, and no air sealing under any of it. Story-and-a-half knee walls are the biggest single heat loss in this city.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the upstairs of my story-and-a-half so hot in summer and cold in winter?

The finished room up there is sitting inside the roof structure, and the surfaces around it are barely insulated. Behind your knee walls are open attic pockets that hit 130 degrees on a July afternoon and outdoor temperature in January, and there is often nothing but a sagging batt between that pocket and your bedroom. Air moves freely through it. Spray foaming the roofline stops the air movement and the conduction together, so the heat stays inside the envelope. One job we did was a story-and-a-half in south Minneapolis where the owners had been paying four to five hundred dollars a month in energy bills for years. They were gutting the upstairs anyway, so we foamed the 2×4 rafters at three inches and sealed the whole envelope before the sheetrock went back. It is day and night up there now, including in summer.

My attic already has plenty of insulation. Why is the house still drafty?

Because R-value is not air sealing, and those are two different jobs. We go into homes with a good deep R-60 in the attic that are still drafty, because there is no vapor barrier, or the attic was never vented correctly, or, most often, the attic floor was never sealed at the top plates and the ceiling penetrations. Warm air leaves through those gaps and pulls cold air in somewhere lower to replace it. Adding another layer of blown-in on top of an unsealed deck does not stop air. It just filters it.

How long do we have to wait after spray foam before we can be back in the house?

For a typical residential job, plan on staying out of the work area during the spray and for a period after while it cures and the space is ventilated. Travis will tell you the exact time before we start, because it depends on the product, the thickness, and how well that space can be ventilated. Some foam makers recommend 24 hours. Finishing the job and coming back in are two different things: nine times out of 10 we finish the same day, but your wait to come back in still runs from when the spraying stops. Attic removals with foam and a blow-back can also finish the same day, though if access is bad or there is a lot to take out it can run to three days.

Our rim joists have never been touched. Does that matter on a 1958 house?

It matters a lot, and on a house that age it is almost always untouched. Rim joists did not get spray foamed as standard practice until the late nineties, so anything built here before that is bare by default. What that is, structurally, is a framed 2×10 or 2×12 sitting right at ground level with nothing in it. Cold conducts straight through it and your first floor stays cold. As the house settles you get cracks, heat escapes, and those same cracks are how mice get in. Foaming the rim joist is one of the cheapest changes you can make and one of the fastest things you actually feel.

Do you do free estimates, and how fast can you get out here?

Free, and Travis does it himself rather than sending an estimator. That is the point of how this is set up. When somebody decides they need this handled, they usually decide on a Tuesday and want an answer by Friday, and if nobody calls them back their attention goes somewhere else. So he answers the phone when he can and gets out quickly. He will also walk the job with you before it starts and again when it is finished, so you actually see what changed. Call (612) 730-9417.
