What is Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is a common choice of insulation that you can have installed in your home or business. But what exactly is spray foam and what does it do? This two-part blog series will discuss spray foam insulation and what it is and what it can do to benefit your building. Continue reading to learn more:

Combination of Chemicals that Expand When Applied

Spray foam is created when two chemicals are mixed together and sprayed from a mixing chamber through a hose and out of a spray gun. The two chemicals used are isocyanate (also known as polyisocyanate), the chemical that makes up most of the foam’s volume, and polyol resin (aliphatic polyurethane) which reacts with the isocyanate to create the rigid, closed-cell foam. The chemical reaction happens in three stages: first, an exothermic reaction creates heat and helps the components combine; second, water trapped in the mixture expands rapidly; third, carbon dioxide gas adds to the growth process.

While the Chemicals are Expanding, They are Also Drying

Spray foam insulation is a flexible, synthetic material that expands and hardens when sprayed into place. It is often used to seal cracks and gaps in homes and buildings. But it is becoming more popular than ever for homeowners. The reason for its popularity is partly due to its high R-value which means that it provides better energy efficiency than other types of insulation. The best thing about spray foam is that the ingredients are mixed at the factory so they react together as soon as they come out of the canister. So whilst they’re expanding they are also drying. This means that once they are applied, the insulation can be left alone until it is completely dry – sometimes just 24 hours later depending on how warm/hot your space is – without risking any damage to either yourself or your home.

It Can Help Improve Air Quality

It is the air quality that really counts! Spray foam insulation has been shown to help with airflow through a house, which in turn helps improve the overall air quality of a space. That means less dust and pollen, which is great news for people suffering from allergies. It also keeps your home more energy-efficient, as better airflow through your HVAC system allows you to use less energy to cool or heat your home. Even if you do not suffer from allergies, good air quality can help you sleep better at night—and who does not want that?

Spray foam is an insulator that has many benefits. It is a type of insulation that expands when installed so it reaches all the small holes and spaces. This then helps improve things such as air quality in your home. If you think spray foam insulation is a good choice for you, contact your local spray foam insulation contractor today.
